I'm from the south, and I didn't know anyone who went to sleep away camp. None of us had parents who could afford it either though.

I think it’s great to provide the opportunity if your kids want to go. My mom really didn’t want me to go away but let me anyway and camp was such a great experience for me - truly shaped the person I became, I was so happy there, and have so many great memories. I’m really thankful that she put my wants over hers. (I also had a sister who very much did NOT want to go to camp and she respected that too.)

Shorter camps are fine, especially at younger ages, but I do think 3-4 weeks is best for really getting the full camp experience and building relationships.

My spouse didn't want the kids going to sleep away, said we were outsourcing child care. I convinced him that the independence and confidence the kids would gain, not to mention the time alone we would have, would outweigh any negatives. Kids are now in college, and wonderful memories and lifelong friends from camp. One wrote their college essay about their life changes/growing they did at camp/because of camp.

Absolutely ZERO regrets from my husband now that it's after the fact.

Also - wanted to say that that is not a thing where I grew up. None of my friends from where I grew up send their kids away. I couldn’t believe it when I moved here and heard all the talk. I started with one week.

Mine never went away for a month. Too long for us both. A week at some point.

This is all the more reason to let DC go.

There's 1, 2 and 3 week options as well. I would really start with less weeks.
