Got turned down as well despite a nearly 4.0 GPA. The autogenerated email in two type colors was not very reassuring.

You can always call to ask what the issue was.
We had a friend who had a >3.8 gpa email last year and reached out, and they told her what the GPA cutoff was - something like 3.85, her son missed it by 0.01

I can't help to wonder what finagling has taken place. They need to go back to the standardized test. Subjective letters of recommendation that overworked math and English teachers are forced to write is not ideal. So if you had one really caring teacher, who took the time to write thoughtful letters that gets more weight than another teacher, who is pissed off about having to do it who writes a letter that basically says " Sally will do fine at school without walls "?

With all these "qualified applicants," it's too bad DC doesn't open another high school with a similar model.

Ugh, my kid is going to be heartbroken. I told them the GPA was what they could control and that after that, it was a lottery. But to have a perfect GPA and be knocked out of the pool really stings.

Right it’s sort of crazy- what’s the standard to get an interview? I can accept an opaque admissions standard I suppose…

No interview here either. Damn. This letter should've provided some statistics about how many applicants there were for how many spots and what that ultimate GPA threshold was or what the combined score with the recommendation letters was. We had to remind our kid's math teacher three times and she ended up submitting her letter on the last day. I can only imagine how great it wasn't.
