It’s very helpful for doctor recommendations and car repair recommendations.

Also it helped with questions like where to park for graduation etc

My sons roommate was in a significant car accident and a woman on the FB group went to the hospital until the mom arrived, my son appreciated her being there with him

I would never do this but some parents were like “I have nobody to tailgate with” … the son worked the tickets for the game and people invited them it wa so nice.

Wow. How nice of her to do that.

Many will not let you join until after your student has enrolled. But yes, they can be very useful. If the feed is annoying, don't use it. Simply search the group when you are looking for specific recommendations.

I was never on FB either until my son made his college decision and deposit. I only use FB for that. I don’t post anything just read the information…very helpful for freshman year. But the mods can get intense and it’s armchair drama at times !

I joined for a few schools he got admitted to (large public universities). Stayed in for the school he chose and dropped the others. It's mostly freshmen parents asking questions (the same ones every year). How do kids get to the airport? Can you raise the dorm beds? Can anyone recommend a good dentist nearby? And the like. Occasionally senior parents ask about graduation. I've found it helpful.

I did, and I noticed that there are a LOT of posts looking for psychiatrists for students; so much so that it makes me want to have a game plan in place for my kid before they head off in August.

I’m glad we joined. A HUGE issue arose for our kid and we needed advice. We got reassurance and the info we needed very quickly.

Careful now. Somebody reports posts making fun of the Facebook parents and they get deleted. There are a lot of thin skinned people on here.

My kid is across the country in an unfamiliar area. Yes, I’m on the FB page and have picked up helpful info and once sold extra tickets to a football game. The only drama I’ve seen is parents who get upset/outraged about xyz on behalf of their kids which is easy enough to scroll right by.

Yes - I have joined all the ones where my kid has been accepted and is seriously considering. These groups are actually pretty helpful.

But we did join the email distribution for parents and that’s been helpful to hear what’s going on at the school

What drama?

Are there shuttles from the airport? Is dramatic for you?

No such discussion on the board I’m on. Lots of good advice, doctors, car repair, places that will send birthday cakes, what does graduation look like, etc.

Discussions of dorm room decorations.? Is that critical knowledge?

They are useful. Also a source of great humor and, at times, will make you feel like a superior parent and person.

No. My son's college would allow parents to join once they registered but that was just to a new parents' group. Once the school year started and they verified you, you were invited to join the parents' group for the entire school.

We’re on for kids at Oxford. It’s been very helpful from everything from figuring out what to send, to how to deal with student disabilities. It’s also helpful for parents trying to figure out where to stay for graduation and where to eat
