Individual sports are significantly more expensive than group sports and travel costs add up as well.

Our son plays squash competitively and it’s easily $20K per year when you include private coaching and travel costs. I know of tennis parents who spend upwards of $40K/ year/ child. I don’t think soccer or basketball are nearly as expensive.

Tavel Hockey $5k with goalie discount for team. Doesn’t include travel expenses. Goalie equipment $2k (some of it used). private lessons and camp around $3500. Yeah so $15-$20k for an 11 year old who loves the sport, but definitely won’t play in college. Hahahaha

We live in CO now. Kid 1- 10k for ski team including hotel costs and 6k for club soccer- she’s second team so little/few overnights. She participates loosely in a year round track program for conditioning that runs about 3k. Kid 2- 6k for excel gymnastics including meets plus track (3k).

Kid 1 is 11 and kid 2 is 9. Typing this out always feels insane. But they are happy and tired.

I'm guessing $15-18k hockey, including camps, lessons, hotels, etc. travel, third team.

Wow sailing on cheap by comparison, about $1800/year for fall and spring team, regatta fees and a dry suit plus other gear

I don’t think any sport could touch horses. Maybe skiing? Maybe sailing if you bought a boat?

There are a shocking number of people spending >$100k/year for their children to ride. And a significant number spending >$1m.

No, you can spend $1000 on one baseball bat and a fielding glove. But the bat will last you a year (though you may need a warranty replacement in that year) and the glove, once you are in an adult glove (which is where you are spending $200-$600 or more, can last many, many years, though might need relacing occasionally.

Batting gloves cost anywhere between $10 and $150--my kids use ~ $30 batting gloves and we get the (very cheap -- maybe $3 or $4) Dick's warranty to be able to replace them as needed for a year.

It’s this. We had an away tournament this weekend and I don’t even include hotel, travel or food costs in my mental calculations on what we spend. We like to travel and it’s not a burden. N for others, this would be a huge factor. Same with camps. They went to camps for childcare when they were little. I don’t think about it if they go to 1-2 expensive away sports camps now.


I ask because if x sport is way above our comfort level to spend, I don’t want to let him play now when he’s not serious yet. Or I’d like to at least nudge him toward other options

Lacrosse. We probably spend around $20k/year with the travel.

^ rough estimate - I’m probably spending about 10-12k this year on volleyball with the travel. No planes, all car travel but multiple away tournaments.
