Oh interesting! I guess they just stopped offering that at Lake Braddock!!! I hadn’t realized that.

If starting in 7th, and at level 3 in 9th grade, are you only with 9th graders, or would you have 10, 11or 12 graders in your class if they were also taking Level 3? For McLean HS specifically.

This is not true. Thoreau provides the option to either take Spanish/French level 1 in 8th or split it into two years (taught at a slower pace) and take part A in 7th and part B in 8th. Completing either one-year level 1 or level 1 part B gets you a high school credit.

1a is an option on my kid's course selection sheet for 7th grade, 2024-25.

Carson is offering Spanish/French 1 and 2 AND Spanish/French 1A and 1B. They also offer Chinese and Japanese 1A and 1B. The school seemed to be highly recommending the 1A and 1B route for kids, at least that is what I was hearing at the Open House. We are at Fox Mill so the conversation about languages is a bit different. The JI kids are told that if they are comfortable with the alphabets then they should be in good shape for the Japanese Immersion class. Other languages were recommended to go tthe 1A and 1B route. I think a good number of kids prefer that route because it allows for more of the fun electives.

Regarding world languages, starting at 7th grade would be perfect. I know OP is considering having their kid start in 8th, but you should really want your kid to be in level III of their course by freshman year. By then the less serious kids have been weeded out, and a good number of the kids sticking it out are going to want to take an AP course in the language.

Also the earlier they start, the more years they get to continue in it in HS if they want to
