A binder, laptop, and pencil pouch is not a lot for kids to carry, unless they have a disability, of course.

Tissues, glasses, etc. pads/tampons? it’s a lot. They should be able to have a backpack to go around to their classes.

Frost is the opposite - they expect you not to use a locker. You can ask for one, but only after the first 3 weeks and they don't have enough for every student.

My middle schooler has to share a locker with a stranger. It's the weirdest set up I've seen.

Our MS doesn't have enough for every student, but those who request one get one. Mine did.

Same with Longfellow. I don't know how much my kid uses his locker since he doesn't have textbooks but he may swap out binders during the day. When I was at the school with him the other day for an extracurricular we went to his locker... all that was in there was a stack of papers that he promptly threw away, a sweatshirt that I brought home, and locker shelves that he insisted make using the locker more difficult so I brought those home too. I tried to help him figure out how the shelves would help him be more organized but no dice.

My 7th grader used her locker in the beginning of the year for her things for cross-country practice. Hasn't used it since then because she doesn't need it, and wearing a jacket isn't worth the time it would take to store it. Her bus is really crowded and she prefers to race straight there at dismissal so she gets a seat.

Interestingly, her older sister in a much smaller private high school doesn't use a locker either, even though she does have textbooks and doesn't have the same time constraints. She says the kids who use them are primarily storing extra gear for sports practices. No one wants to take the time to stop and switch books, they'd rather just carry everything.

That would be true. 5 minute passing period in middle school is definitely long enough for students to get in trouble (and they aren't even using the bathroom, because 5 minutes into class it's an "emergency" and they must go right away.
