I'm surprised you say it's not uncommon, Uber drivers do have background checks. I'm looking at articles and while it does happen more often than it certainly should, which is never, the vast majority of Uber rides are safe. I'm sorry for your friend's daughter and I hope she finds a way to heal from the incident both physically and mentally. I do not believe the parents are at fault at all.

I have never not been on a video call with my family member when I am on an Uber or Taxi ride. I am 55 yrs old.

The point is that situations that can be exploited by a criminal should be well managed and we should be on guard.

I mean, I’m not sure my 16 year old daughter is better off riding with some boy from her high school versus an Uber driver. She has probably been more at risk for assault her whole life by someone I would have considered a friend, neighbor, or relative. If I had divorced and remarried, she would likely have been most at risk from stepdad. People are terrible at actually calculating risks.

My kid was 17 when she left for college, so yes there is overlap, however small, between Uber teen and college kids. I wouldn’t have put her in an Uber alone (I’m over 50 and would prefer not to do that myself!), but the poster you’re quoting isn’t wrong and even an 18 yo going to college who hasn’t had experience with this could easily be at risk.


Oh, give us a break. Uber teen is for as young as 13. We are not talking about a small window of a 17 year old going off to college.

Not that poster but my kids drive alone every day. I would not want them in an Uber.

The anger to the parents is that they love the child and have a greater responsibility to the child. They failed enormously.
The perpetrator is certainly at fault, of course. But if one lives their child, one would never had allowed the ride.

It is both their faults. The perp for committing the crime and the parents for their complicity in allowing their child to be put in an unsafe situation.

The parents have a responsibility to keep their child safe. If a child wants to get a gun, is it not the parents fault if a tragedy happens?
