I would get a second opinion. I’ve had my share of dental work, including an implant. I would never want a dentist to drill a healthy tooth because it further compromises the tooth. (Trust me, I had a crown placed that basically never worked — I ended up spending tons of money on a tooth that had a hidden crack below the gumline and couldn’t be saved.) If you are concerned about the mercury, you actually increase your exposure during the drilling process. Sure, teeth with large fillings could eventually crack… but they also may not.

I'm an endodontist (root canal specialist) and I can tell you that removing asymptomatic fillings and replacing them with a crown is a great way to come and see me! I treat so many patients who were asymptomatic prior to the crown being done, and then require a root canal due to pain afterward. Doing "a crown a year" is a great way to milk your insurance company for money while compromising your teeth. Get a second opinion!

+1 to getting a second opinion. I'm another one who grew up without floride (we had well water) and have thin enamel so I have cavities in pretty much every molar. I've had 2 root canals and have 4 crowns. My dentists is pretty conservative and prefers not to touch a tooth unless it really needs to be (he sent me a specialist to have the root canals done but he did the crowns).

I've got several other teeth that will likely need crowns but it might be years from now and it might not be the ones we're watching. I needed one crown 25 years ago and it wasn't until 15 years after that that I got my second. There's no way I would proactively crown my teeth.

THIS. WHY would you do this to yourself with no issues?

Scam.

Some of my old fillings were just taken out and replaced with that white ceramic stuff. I have one crown because in that molar the filling was large and a crack was developing in that particular molar.

But, to replace teeth with crowns just because they had a filling and no other reason is a complete and total $$ scam. If you grew up in the 70s/80s people tended to have more fillings.

Oh and I have had this one crown for literal decades and I have been told every year for the past 15 or so that I should remove it and get a new one. I'm risking whatever they claim may happen because it has yet to happen in 15+ years.

You’re a baby. You don’t need to be put under for a crown.

I’m not the PP but some of us do. I have anxiety and am terrified at the dentist. Better to take A Xanax than lose my shit right there in the chair.

a xanax is not nearly the same as being put under.

I’m getting my 3rd crown in 2 weeks and I’m
51.
It’s gonna be $1,400. It’s a lot bing I wouldn’t think u need one crown per year.

Crowns are easy breezy but why woudl you get one in advance of needing one? That's nuts. AND EXPENSIVE.

Because a crown a year is what most insurance plans cover with their maximums. So the dentist is maximizing their money.

Ï agree with getting a second opinion but do not tell the dentist about the original dentist's plan; just see what they recommend without knowing your history. For what its worth, my two front teeth are crowns, I had a bike accident when I was 12 and broke them. I don't love it but it's not really a big deal day to day. Crowns are pricy though.

It all depends on the condition. people coming out and saying oh you dont need one and I've had all my silver fillings all my life may have teeth with silver fillings in better condition as yours. You can not make a blanket statement like that. get a 2nd opinion if you like but dont rely on random dentist haters on DCUM to give you dental advice.

Wouldn’t hurt to get a second opinion. I’m 48 and in my mid 30s had one root canal and a crown. The crown failed 10 years later and I ended up getting an implant and a new crown. It was a molar so I didn’t need a flipper while the implant healed luckily.

It wasn’t that big of a deal but I would be wary of someone telling me just proactively to have to have a bunch of crowns.
