Finally - MCPS makes a smart decision.
Why is MCEA putting out something that should be announced by MCPS?

Take it up with MSDE. They approved asynchronous days.

So a friend of mine in a Boston suburb has this for a half day every Weds. Public school btw. She loves this, and says it's really good for her 2 kids (teens) to plan things out during this half day. They use the time for projects, studying for tests, group meetings, etc. you can also go for office hours with teachers then.
Exactly - at the high school level, this asynchronous day will serve as a great way for students to catch up on independent work, period. Those who think kids will have to tackle all kinds of additional complicated assignments are probably incorrect. In most courses, students will be asked to follow the lessons posted in Canvas as they would have in the building or will be asked to review concepts learned in class.

If your child asked me for the work in advance, I would provide it. Please don’t wait until the day you leave.
I would also give your child an opportunity to make up the work when they return from this trip.
Please send me a cool postcard or a photo of your child at a historical site or engaged in a cultural activity.
This is high school and advanced classes. No way to understand how that would work or who to ask.
It’s going to be a single assignment for each class and will probably be something light, even for very advanced classes since teachers won’t be available to assist. I myself teach advanced classes and will likely ask students to read or watch a video and then practice evaluating claims and citing evidence.
Ask your child’s teachers. Or better yet, have your child email their teachers right now with the details.
“Dear Mr. Loud,
My family will visit Tajikistan for roughly three weeks beginning 4/15. This is my first opportunity to meet my grandparents on both sides of the family. As they are in their eighties and in frail health, this trip is especially crucial to my family and my emotional well-being.
As you may be aware, the snow day makeup will be an asynchronous day on 4/22. At that point, I will be in my grandparents’ rural province with no way to access Canvas to complete any assignments.
Would you be willing to give me the work in advance so I could complete it on or before 4/14?
If that is not possible, would you be willing to allow me to make up the work when I return to school on 5/3?
Thank you.”
Repeat for each teacher. “Dear Mrs. Tall…” “Dear Dr. Funny…”

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:DC is in K so we haven’t had to deal with this. So…. will we be on a computer all day at home?
No computer time. Asynchronous means they will be working on something at home. For kindergarten it would probably be a practice exercise or small project. It is unlikely that work will be due the next day since some kids might need some additional support. Honestly, this isn't anything to worry about at all. It's a much better way to make up the day than to add days to the end of the year. It constantly surprises me that people get so worked up about this - it snows. I'm not sure why we even have to make up a few missed days do to snow. But since the state requires it, this is an easy way to make it up.
