Just had dinner at the newly opened Pastis this weekend. Highly recommend it! I also agree with PPs on L'Ardente and would add L'Avant-Garde (but it's $$$).

Outside of the obvious that Zaytinia is Mediterranean and Oyamel is Mexican, I think they’re fairly similar with food, ambiance, and price point. I personally prefer Oyamel, but haven’t been to either in years.

I was going to suggest this. Its heyday of cool and trendy is long gone but if your friends are from out of town they won't know that.

I was going to suggest this right after OP posted, but thought I was probably too old to know what was cool anymore. But I think Jose Andres is pretty awesome regardless, and it's a great spot. (And veg friendly.)

Honestly, we took friends there from out of town and they lost their mind. And when we told them it was more than 20 years old they literally didn’t believe us. I know I’m old but I swear Zaytinya has held up remarkably well.
