Because there ARE places that do not permit people who are otherwise carrying a gun legally (people with permits) to carry a gun inside. If people are required by law not to carry a gun in these places, then what are they supposed to do with their gun if they also cannot leave it in their car. That seems like a Catch-22 situation.
Is is creating situations like that the *intent* of the law? Because that doesn’t seem like legislating in good faith.
There are plenty of aftermarket secure boxes for storing firearms in vehicles safely and securely. They attach to the vehicles body and are difficult to remove quickly in a parking.
A gun owner who used such a device and still had the firearm stolen would not be penalized by the proposed law. They took efforts to "secure" their firearm.

Leave it at home? Why do you need it with you to run errands?
Because most prosecutors in the DMV practice catch a release even with violent criminals. Because when seconds matter the police are only minutes away. Because, I want to return home after running errands. Get the point.

I guess its easier to blame legal owners than face the real changes of the last few decades.
Yep, back in high school had dozens of vehicles both students and teachers with guns in gun racks in the parking lot. Never a shot fired. Guns are still the same, it is the crazy people running free that are causing the problems, not law abiding citizens.

Leave your gun secured at home. You don't need it to safely drive to the post office. Can you even hear yourself?
Yes, "going postal" refers postal employees going on shooting sprees at work. All the more reason for customers to be able to protect themselves.
