Our private school doesn't have this....

But given it's high school - I like this idea as a nice surprise. Before others started to reply to OP I wondered if it was a Senior prank!

In the Arlington Diocese, the Bishop gives each principal of the schools a day they can select off. It is called the Bishop's day. For the last 5-6 years, our principal has used that to close the school the day after the Super Bowl. I think a bunch of the Arlington diocese schools do this.

OP never said anything related to concerns about her kid staying home alone, just that she was surprised by the very last-minute announcement. Maybe she’s new to the school. Prep is closed today as well for the same reason. Looks like a Catholic School thing?

Other Catholic HSs are closed tomorrow according to my kid. It’s nice.
