Subject: Undergrad Business School - UMD vs UVA
The problem I see with UVA for OOS candidates who want McIntire is why take the risk matriculating in the first place if you’re not sure you can get in? It’s very expensive OOS and it’s not like you’re looking at a top Economics department or other related business oriented disciplines a if you’re not admitted.

Disagree. VT has a great program and a direct admit. It's a gamble at UVA.
Tech does not have anywhere near the recruiting track record that uva has. Completely different Leagues.
Please, give examples. Sometimes you need to have a good understanding of what your kid wants to do post-grad.
As an example, my kid is at Wharton and wants Wall Street…perfect match. However, if you want to go work for a Fortune 500 (non-tech), Wharton isn’t a great match. Most no -tech Fortune 500s aren’t bothering recruiting because they know Wharton wants GS, Blackstone, Citadel, Seqouia, McKinsey.

It is very difficult to get into UVA’s commerce school - which you apply to after you’ve started at UVA. But, if you get in, it’s an amazing leg up . . .

OP here, the above post nailed the position DC is in. A double major with acceptances from both Smith and Music. Waiting to see if there will be merit in the next few weeks. The direct admit to Smith and the possible merit are the factors that would make UMD a very attractive option. I was looking to see if anyone here have students with experience (rigor, career support, general atmosphere) with either business school.
UVA is in a different league when it comes to business education. Depending on the area of concentration, that could make a significant difference upon graduation.
Let’s not get carried away - undergraduate outcomes are pretty similar.

I think this is the crux…I would be pretty pissed to go to UVA expecting Mcintire and not get in.
Why don’t these schools just all do direct admit.
UVA probably thinks that many OOS accepted students would not attend knowing that the business school if off the table even before they enroll.

But anyway still UVA if in state. It’s not impossible to get into McIntire, they take like 60%. Gotta have high grades and a lot of club and leadership.
Don’t you apply as a freshman? How do you have lots of clubs and leadership…it’s just more HS BS.
Sorry speaking as someone familiar with how is has been with second year spring applications. You’re right it’s now spring first year, no idea how that will work but much better for students to be able to change their plans if needed.

But is it ethical for OOS students hoping to get into McIntire? That UVA Econ degree doesn’t carry nearly the same weight. With the huge cost of OIS attendance these days, UVA should really be more concerned with what is right for the student and not for bragging rights.

the 60% admit rate is misleading as some who declare business deselect themselves after not doing well in weed out classes, so the true rate is probably lower. Still, not impossible and might be worth the gamble.
