I personally loved Santorini but it was crowded even in May when I noticed only one cruise ship docked. I think that in summer the crowds would be terrible. The Acropolis is a wonderful cultural visit that will be cool for your kids to see.

This is a tough choice but I would also choose Athens for the kids. The historical sights are a world highlight.

I'd go for Santorini. Athens is going to be very hot, and it'll be just another city to quickly see in a day. If you're going in mid summer, the walk uptown the Parthenon will not be fun. On the other hand, you can pick a good beach in Santorini and have a great day at the beach. I realize that you have some island time already, but I think summer days in the Aegean>summer days in the city.

Athens. Santorini in the summer is overrun with tourists. We were there (and in other parts of Greece) last summer and although the views are spectacular, most of our time was trying to walk around while dodging a million twenty-somethings posing for IG photos.

Definitely Athens, the climb to the Acropolis is very cool, and don't miss the top floor of the Acropolis Museum.
