I was attacked a lot in 3rd and 4th grade by boys. Beat up physically multiple times. The relational aggression started in 5th-6th, and hit peak in 7-8.

For my son, it started in K.

100% agree that the bullies take cues from their mothers (at least girls). And we're not in McLean.

+1 yeah I think 2nd/3rd grade is when we notice things went from oh they’re just kids who haven’t been socialized well to oh look this is who the mean kids are.

I’ve noticed some mean kids (mostly boys) in my DS’s 2nd grade class. I’m not sure if I would call them bullies because to me, that implies a degree of … social engineering, I guess? In and out-group behavior? And these kids, there are two of them, both boys, are just mean loners. They’re not friends with each other either. I’m sure there’s some “you’re not our friend because you don’t have xyz item” style bullying amongst the girls, especially the older ES girls, but I have a boy so I’m not as in tuned to them.

my daughter suffered significant bullying in 2nd grade. the other one experienced mild bullying in kindergarten.

I've sadly seen it in 1st....I guess it depends on the group of kids.

Birth to grave

For both of my kids, it was 4th grade. That's when the mean girls/queen bees started building cliques and bossing other girls around and the boys started playing rougher on the playground.

As a teacher I’ve seen it at virtually every grade/age, even preschool. But typically it gets to be more of a problem around 4th-5th.

The really bullies can also be the moms. Don't be fooled! That starts early and goes into MS.

I think around 4-5. Mostly 5th. A little in 3rd possibly depending on the kid.
