More likely answer is something still awkward but not nefarious - he was working a job close by the house that didn't have a bathroom, really had to go and knew you had a bathroom/backdoor open and was just going to use the bathroom quickly and go. Again, sounds weird but if you've never been someone that has worked a job that doesn't have regular access to the bathroom it is a true problem haha

I think a lot depends on how you found/hired him but get cameras today. It’s a good idea anyway.

If he was going to burgle the place, he’s probably not an ongoing threat. Sounds like if that’s what’s going on he sensed a low risk opportunity that you can just remove.

It's suspicious, so it certainly could be for the purposes of burglary. Some tradespeople are horribly disorganized though. Twice in my life I've been the beneficiary of tradespeople doing work on my house (the wrong house) while I wasn't home. Never hired them. They just showed up and started doing work.
