We did this to DDs hair a few years ago. To get the color to show, we had to bleach the tips. I can’t find a link to the dye we used.

DD with dark brown hair used Clairol color crave hair makeup (rose gold showed up the best for her), when she wanted a change. It is very temporary, but on her hair, you could absolutely see it.

Hideous.

We had grabbed single use packs at Great Clips when they were getting their hair cut so I don't recall the brand. I think it's called colored hair wax or chalk or similar on Amazon.

Hi- another mom of Asian/white girl who wants to dye the tips. She has medium brown hair. As a data point, I did the tips with manic panic (red/pink) and it really did not show up at all.

I’ve never dyed my hair so help me understand this- if the hair gets damaged from bleach/dye, can’t you just grow it out and cut it off? Why doesn’t the new (and undamaged) hair just replace the damaged hair?

Yes, bleaching damages hair. As other's have said, the only way to do anything more than tint dark hair is to bleach it first and then dye it. It's a high maintenance process.

During covid I dyed my son's hair blue at home. He's a dark blonde and even with that base the color was dull.

Same. My boys have dark brown hair and they were ticked off that they couldn't get anything better than a hint of color in full sunshine.

What does work is the tinted gel/mousse. It's basically like thick hair paint and it completely coats the hair. It's washable but it looks like exactly what it is - thick hair gel. The color can be bright, though.

To the PP - Why do people do this? She's a straight A student who doesn't go nuts with make up and is a great athlete. The one thing she would like is to be able to have some fun and have color in her hair like her friends. She is 12 years old - what is your problem???!

We've tried a lot of different sprays and stuff - nothing really works. If anyone has any suggestions, would be grateful. She doesn't want bleach nor I. She doesn't want clip ins or extensions. Just to see her hair a different color than black Although in the summer, with sun her hair definitely lightens. She'll get a tint when we spray but nothing like color.

What's wrong with bleach if she just wants the ends a fun color? You can just chop it off when she's done with it. No harm done.

seriously- what's the issue with being so sad or whatever- my 10 year old had the same, we bleached the ends, and then colored it, in fact her younger sibling got excited so I bleached. strand of teh 4 year olds hair and dyed it green too. Yes it's annoying that ppl with darker hair have to bleach the hair first but its bette than having to score 350 extra points on the SAT which lies in her future. You do have to rinse in the gel every few weeks b/c it wears off but then you just get a hair cut. Its really not that big a deal- its just hair, its not a tattoo!

If she just wants the ends, like the bottom 2", go ahead and bleach it. It will damage it yes, but you can just snip it off when she gets tired of it.

Yes, bleaching will damage her hair. It uses a chemical reaction to strip out pigment. Think how spilling bleach on an item of clothing can result in little pinprick holes. Bleaching hair is not dissimilar. It will change the texture of the parts of her hair that touches it and the hair will become more coarse and porous.

We live in an area that is majority Asian/mixed Asian kids. My DD doesn’t want to dye her hair but a lot of her friends have done it in the past. The girls who dye their hair bleach just the ends so they can grow it out and cut off the damage later, or they bleach one piece under and in the back so it shows when hair is pulled up in a ponytail for sports but isn’t visible if hair is down at school or around the aunties. And that way, if it has to be cut due to really bad damage, it’s not a face-framing piece and isn’t visible.
