Herndon is no different that any of the other clubs who are currently going through shake ups at the moment.

VSA is. Virginia Soccer Association. It’s based in Prince William County. If you live in Herndon/Reston/Great Falls area that would be a long drive with traffic on weeknights. Loudoun Soccer is probably closer to you. Maybe look into that one too.
As for guest playing — is anyone playing games other than futsal right now? Is that what you asked to guest play? Maybe there is some logistical reason they both said no that is specific to futsal? If I recall correctly GFR has futsal training open to all but only certain players get invited to go to futsal tournaments. Not sure what Herndon is doing right now. There are only a few futsal leagues in the area.
Fair warning - I would caution you to steer very clear of Loudoun Soccer if you think that Herndon is bad! They will tell you your son will be on the "A Team" (ECNL in this case). Come tryout time, even if they said that you would be shocked at how many players they drop down to B, C teams, then promise you a "Dual Roster" that won't amount to anything. I have not only lived this but know so many families who have left because of this bait and switch. And we are not talking about bad players either!! The development is next to laughable and they had to put together an alliance for the top teams just to draw in outside talent since they know that can't create good players themselves.
Either they are horrible these coaches are horrendous evaluators or complete liars! Which clubs offer competitive league play and honest player development.

We also left because of this situation and landed at GFRSC. On the boys side they have strong teams and good coaches. OVerall we have been happy there. I'm not sure about the TD since my son is younger (not full field but travel) but our record is strong in our age bracket.

I would be wary of GFR because I think there is way too much going on there right now to trust what will be in place come next year regarding the players and the coaches. At this time I might keep my son in rec and then spend the spring going around and watching teams and coaches. It is a good way to pick a "fit" for your player based on your own likes and dislikes of a coach.
