I feel like in all of them the students obsessed with getting into T20 drown out the rest of everyone trying to get into good but not crazy schools.

Really? I have not noticed that. Now I am going to go look! CC does suffer from some posters who seemingly post on every forum, as self-declared experts. But generally people do try to provide constructive advice. And the moderators do try to keep people on topic.

Seems like a cliquish ladies club. An echo chamber of a small group of posters. Excellent for info on University of California schools. The site is toxic and often misinformed--although I think that the posters mean well.

I agree with this. Heavy use of CC plus Sara is a strong combination. And unfortunately with the ED games out there those with more knowledge do better. It’s not fair, but it’s the reality.

I like CC more for deep dives into a specific college or subject. Their results threads are aging but years before Reddit you could read a ton of student results for each school, enough that you could get a feel for the bar was and for what that school is looking for. In my limited experience even a couple of admits with profiles similar to my child had predictive value. There also used to be parents with deep experience in a particular school and really understood the school and the nuances of admission there; their answers still turn up if you Google search subject + College Confidential.

I did a lot of research on a small number of schools for my kids. With that I was able to guide them with some confidence in the odds.

Unfortunately those threads are pretty old, but I still think reading them is useful in giving you at least a sense what schools are looking for. It’s a lot of work, but I found the effort well worth it.
