You’ve never heard someone suggest you have a drink before and/or after doing something hard and/or unpleasant? Like “that was a tough conversation to have/hard day at work/whatever, I need a drink”? Or even seen someone in tv or a movie toss back a shot before doing something they don’t want to do?

This unpleasant thing is totally optional. The normal answer would be "so just don't do it if you're not comfortable." But I will take OP's word that her DH was joking.

I agree with everyone who says you should do what you feel like doing and not feel comfortable, but I'm reminded of a funny story. A colleague said she went to a topless beach in Europe with a bunch of European friends. Initially she wore her top but she removed it after about 15 minutes because all of the other women were topless and she felt silly. She was very comfortable. Many hours later, some of her friends from college in America walked by. They weren't traveling together and she had no idea they were even in the same country. In a split second, she felt completely exposed, screamed, and quickly covered her breasts. Everyone involved was laughing at her but she couldn't stand the thought of being topless in front of guys from college. I'm a guy but I actually thought there was a little logic to her reaction. Not much, but a little.

This is bizarre to me, I have no problem being nude in all-women environments and I can imagine my husband liking to see me on a topless beach with a bunch of strangers but there is NO WAY he would want me to be topless in front of couple friends of ours. Is he a swinger?

I have no problem with other people being nude at a nude beach but I wouldnt want to go to one over other beaches and if I did, I would just wear a top myself.

I can’t imagine feeling pressured to be topless if you don’t want to be. Tops are surely allowed.

I say you go with what youre comfortable with. Start out with your swim suit as normal. If you want to try it, then do! But dont feel pressured to do it, and dont drink to excess to twist yourself into thinking youre comfortable with something you aren't.

Prelude to a ménage a trois

When I was single I remember going topless at a Club Med in Guadalupe. No problem! But I refused to enter their wet tee shirt contest! Those were the days! They also had a nude beach and I remember one guy burned his butt so bad he had a hard time sitting down. I thought it best to stay in the water.

My first time topless was in the south of France where almost all the women were topless. I quickly realized it was a non event and I’ve done it a bunch of times since with friends. Once you’ve done it once you realize it’s no big deal.
