NP. I was definitely 12 reading VC Andrews. Renee on my bus, who was 8th grade, gave me Flowers in the Attic.

Those hockey characters actually tend to be respectful sexual partners. It isn’t like the old romance novels…they very specifically prioritize the female partner’s pleasure. They can be quite explicit, but I’d trade the healthy explicit stuff for some of the less explicit but troublesome things in CoHo books for sure.

Look, those books are way more realistic than porn. They discuss the emotions, feelings, the buildup, etc..

Another millennial woman who read VC Andrews in middle school. This is pretty age-appropriate, OP. I would personally prefer my kids get their pornography in this form than the degrading stuff on prnhub. I would also prefer them reading a story to learning these things with a romantic partner at 12/13.

My daughter is 14 and read a romance novel on the recommendation of her friends over winter break. She said it "wasn't really her thing" but she enjoyed the book otherwise. I was personally so delighted she was reading, I would've given her VC Andrews right after if she'd asked.

VC Andrews wasn’t super graphic like porn though.

Another avid VC Andrews reader here. I was only about 13 when I started reading all of those books. My mother never censored anything that I read which I’m happy about (although it’s entirely possible she had no clue).

Okay yeah, then I think the book is not something to be terribly concerned about. I wouldn't want my kid reading them but I my kid does a lot of things I don't want them to do. The only potential issue is that on social media, book reviewers who promote these relatively tame hockey romances also promote things that are really bad and I think would warrant a discussion because they portray toxic things as good. Okay for adults, not for tweens. One more reason to not let your kids have social media!

And of course continue to have conversations about safe sex and help her develop a secure sense of self. And have family dinner. Those are things that protect against having sex too young and practicing unsafe sex.
