We have been finding this, too, and it’s extremely frustrating and stuck in the 1950s. One school we toured chastised us for inquiring if they had extended day since four hours is apparently already ‘too long’ for the kids. Ok, cool, but some of us have to work. Frustrating that those schools are easy ins for the competitive kindergarten processes.


NP. This is my favorite part about CDS and similar schools. Daycare kids get so sick. When my kids hang out with other SAHM or nanny kids, they don’t get sick.

Same is true in Kensington/Silver Spring

Lots of full-day Montessori schools with aftercare. Non-Montessori preschools tend to be half-day programs or 9-2/3 which doesn't work for someone who works full time.

In McLean, there are at least 3 good options for working parents. Two are near N Arlington. The 3rd is close to Tysons. All are Montessori:

Brooksfield School + its aftercare, 9 month + camp
Lewinsville Montessori is all-day & 12 month
Montessori School of McLean + its aftercare, 9 month + camp
