MCPS central office would never allow it. The old Loss of Credit policy was canned because it was deemed "oppressive" and "racist," and I think that one was triggered with 5 unexcused absences. So there's no way they'd instate something even more unforgiving.

How is requiring kids to be in class racist? I just don’t understand MCPS.

Equity apparently means having no standards for anything - at least that is the MCPS definition

No, that's DCUM right-wingers definition

So in your opinion, why is having attendance requirements not acceptable in MCPS?

And what is the reason for 79.5 + 89.5 is an A?

They round up.

They round up to the nearest 1 for each quarter (but this isn't policy, just teacher choice?)
then up to the nearest 10 for each semester.

The grading and reporting regulation IKA-RA specifies that an A is 90-100, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, etc. So when a student's marking period grade is 89.5 or higher, the rounding up happens and the system is configured to assign an A grade. If they wanted to eliminate the rounding up, they could revise the regulation so a B is 80-89.9, etc.

It will just lead to more grade grubbing by students and parents. Why did you give Larla a 92 on that essay rather than a 93. It’s going to ruin her GPA!

A B in Q1 and a C in Q2 gets you a B for the semester. Many kids slack off in Q2 and Q4 because they know the higher grade will carry them.

MCPS should have pluses and minuses with the letter grades: B+ vs. B- is more informative than just a B

And why does MCPS use an E for failing instead of the widely used F?
No one outside of MCPS understands what an E is.

This is anecdotal only slacker kids slack off.

LOL. I'm a high school teacher and I have 33 (of 112 total) students who have 3 or more unexcused absences already.. and we just finished the 2nd week of the semester.

But I do sincerely hope something does change. A lot of students (and their families) seem to think school is optional these days.

I thought it was optional. We were told that as long as we do not miss more than 10 days in a row, we can stay enrolled in school. Has that changed?

Well, if you’re going to advocate changing the grading policy, how about using the quarter percentages to average together and determine the semester course grade for HS classes. That alone would be meaningful and could still maintain the current transcript.

To who? The only people getting the transcript are other schools. Parents can see their kids grades in Synergy.
