The last few times I went to the DMV I made an appt and didn't wait at all. One was even a pop up DMV in the local library.

Same for our new Tahoe. Just push the On*Star button by the interior lights and they call free General Motors roadside for you.

AAA has kind of weird politics. More geared towards sprawl than to our environment.
