All you have to do is honk your horn and the gas station attendant will pump gas for you. This is usually reserved for the elderly or disabled but I suppose they might budge for someone who doesn't know how to pump, maybe just to prevent that person from spraying gas all over the area.

What is there to learn? This is not rocket science. Although when one of my kids was a new driver I got a call from the gas station saying "I shouldn't use the green handle, right"? No one ever taught her how to do it but she has eyes and saw us do it thousands of times.

Again, New Jersey. Full serve statewide.

Yes, Captain Obvious. That was mentioned in the 3rd post.

NP from NJ -- I didn't find the OP offensive, but you -- you're unnecessarily nasty and not as clever as you think.

Glad to be of service. Feel free to exit stage left if this offends you.

I grew up in NYC and didn't bother to learn to drive. I moved to NJ for a bit, and got a car but didn't drive much and didn't learn to pump gas. Then I moved here with 2 toddlers and had to learn as an adult. I definitely felt dumb the first couple of times, moving really slowly and afraid I was going to blow the place up or something but I figured it out.

My mom, still in NY drives a little bit I'm pretty sure she's never pumped her own gas, ever. My dad doesn't for her.

I have been driving for seven years. I learned to use a gas pump about a year ago. Until then I wasn't driving as far and my husband was filling it up

My DC dated a woman from NJ in college and he had to help her learn to pump gas. She was well travelled but just hadn't had occasion to drive outside NJ by herself before.

They don’t know how or will not learn. I guess they can always use full serve stations or depend on other people to handle the task.

No.

Of course. I’m from NJ and I never had to pump my own gas! I moved to VA in 2013 and for years my husband would grumble but fill my gas tank for me. Then I “hit rock bottom” and had the empty tank light go on and I had to ask a stranger at the station to fill my car so I finally learned how to do it.

I might learn to fill my tires with air next.

This is from quite a few years ago.

My father in law was shocked to find I pumped my own gas. He thought the hose was too heavy for a woman to handle.

I doubt he could handle a screaming toddler.

He practically died when I learned how to change a tire.

I do not like people who pump their gas with their car running. I see this constantly!! There are literally signs all around you telling you not to do this. I get nervous because I think what if another car was not running properly and was being filled with gas while on and the engine combusted somehow and I go kaboom.

I was getting gas at my local station and a lady in a new car with paper plates pulled up and asked the guy next to me for help. She said she'd only ever driven electric cars and didn't know what to do.

I half thought it was a pickup scheme of some kind, but posts for originality if so.

No. I don't know any. But I come from a land where parents make sure their kids know how to pump gas.
