Jewelry $5k
Designer clothing $15k
Handbags $5k, one or two per year
Car $75k, just one as we live in the city
Vacations $40k+

HHI $850k

Our big expenses are mortgage (120k) and private school ($45k). Travel and dining out are important to us and we like to prioritize luxury there

$350-400k per year. Not into jewelry, luxury bags. 1 car that is 6 years old. Our fun spending tends to go to clothes (no items over 1000), eating out a few times a month, and doing 2-3 vacations a year. We live in a pricey area so doesn't feel like this income goes that far.

$700k HHI

We spend $20-30k on “luxuries” mostly clothes, purses, and jewelry. Another $30k/yr on travel. 2 kid. Rest of our lives is pretty simple.

Our HHI is around $250K and we have two kids in college (private). We started earning late and are scrambling to be able to retire before we’re forcibly put out to pasture. I spend absolutely nothing on “luxuries”, our cars average 15 years old and most of our trips involve driving and AirBnBs.

This is so weird to me. I’d buy a $500 blouse, but not fly first class. Never seemed worth it to me for a few hours where I’m fine in economy.

NP here and I'm like PP. I'd never spend $500 on a blouse but always fly first class internationally and have a weekly house cleaning service. It's all about what we value, and it's OK to have different priorities.

500K and your regular expenses are too high? What pray tell are you spending on?

We bought a new car for 40k cash last year.

3k/year on travel.

Most of our spending is on our kids.

We are Dcum poor but not actually poor. HHI 250-300k depending on the year. NW 1.3M

Not being judgmental but 3k on travel seems low. How many kids do you have and where do you go?

2 kids. Carolina coast (not OBX).

Sounds nice! Any recommended times for cheaper rates but still good weather?

HHI: 500k - 600k. I spend a lot on antique jewelry (maybe 30-40k/year) antiques (we have $$$$ art), and personal maintenance. Some $ on purses but not that much - I only have 3 or 4 and keep them for a long time. Very little on clothes- I buy almost all vintage, except lingerie and shoes. We travel a lot, maybe 20k/year. Very little on cars, we're not car people. We have very low fixed expenses, such as mortgage, so we can afford some luxuries.

HHI around $300k

Jewelry: $0
Clothing: trivial (maybe $50/month? I love thrift stores and Poshmark)
Car: Still driving a 2013 ford escape. Looking at replacing it this year and hoping to stay around $40k. Freaking out at how expensive vehicles are!)
Travel: a lot. Not luxury AT ALL, but tons of weekend trips, a couple weeks away in the summer, a week visiting family across the country at Christmas or spring break. If I added up everything I’m sure it’s $12-15k. Heck, one weekend away for a tournament is $300 just in hotels. I probably do that once or twice a month.

HHI is higher than yours. Our luxury is private education and vacation. We actually just take many cheaper vacations, rather than a few expensive ones. Like I'd rather ski 15 days a year in Breck and eat ramen, than 5 days in Apen eating at restaurants. I'll easily drop 100k on my kids tuition for school, but I drive an old subaru.

Honestly OP, I want to know a variation of your question- from the people who buy luxury things - what is their HHI?

I’ve worn the same gold stud earrings for 20 years.
Drive a 2010 Civic. Might replace in the next year because I want a minivan (I have 1 and 3 year olds). Husband drives a 2013 Hyundai hatchback.
My clothes are mostly athleisure and comfy jeans and tees. I work remotely and have a few nicer things for events.
We spend on travel and food.
