I’m guessing: affordable, big sports, not too far away, harassing Jews isn’t an intramural sport, meet people different from kid’s high school, people won’t say “where’s that?”

My parents went to Cornell University. Many people are unaware of it once you get outside the northern half of the Eastern Time Zone. That made a big impression on me. And I am very positive about Cornell. But for myself, I chose 3 state flagships. International people I work with never ask me: "Where's that?"

I'm old enough to remember when Stanford was much less of a big deal outside the West.

My kid lived in Stalnaker. It's right behind the student union, so it's in a great location. It's also one of the oldest buildings on campus-it's on the historic registry BUT it has air conditioning! It's really a great dorm! I'm sure it's already full, but if your kid is interested, OP or anyone else, have them register for the waitlist.

This is one of our DC’s MOs and why WVU is on their list. It’s also an R1 research university with a Level 1 Trauma hospital. Beautiful mountains and friendly people and, most importantly, it’s not UVA. DC liked nothing about their several experiences in Charlottesville. And their predefined “merit” aid grid (depending on your kids stats) makes it financially comparable to (or even cheaper than) VA in-state.

DC is looking for “fit,” not fame.

I have a middling kid who was also accepted (no test scores, 3.2 GPA, private parochial school, kid with ADHD). We're going to go tour. It seems like a decent choice.

I hate how schools get so denigrated, but guess what, B students need schools too.

I went to WVU. I had friends at UVA, VT, JMU, ODU, UMD, Georgetown, etc., and visited all those colleges to see my friends. I partied just as much during my visits at those schools as I did at WVU.

Also, if you're failing after the first semester at WVU (under 2.0 gpa), you get put on academic probation. You have to set up a contract with your advisor about what you will do to get off probation. If you fail to do this and earn under 2.0 again the following semester, you have to enter into another contract and usually have a meeting with the dean of your college. If you do not keep a GPA above 2.0 for 3 semesters total (not consecutive), you are given academic suspension which lasts 1 year. You can either serve the 1 year suspension or take courses during summer or winter break to raise your GPA. If you fail to raise your GPA in those courses, you must serve the 1 year suspension.

I also know someone who went there and is incredibly successful- congratulations OP!

There is a whole other thread of where a C student can go to college. WVU is a great option. There are plenty of kids that aren't super motivated in HS that turn things around in college.

I am really not trying to knock OP, but WVU enrollment has declined 16% over the last 5 years and needs warm bodies. The school has no in-state quotas because they can't survive if they had any real in-state quotas because the state of WV doesn't produce enough kids going to college...and quite honestly, many of the smart ones want to get the hell out of WV.
