My brand new safavieh rugs produced a white powder immediately. They are wool. No backing on them. Had for several years now. Still coming out, just less of it.

I found another link showing exactly what I found under the rug.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/7news.com.au/lifestyle/kmart/shoppers-shock-after-finding-white-dust-under-kmart-rug-c-3135173.amp

So, it's not mold but latex and glue. How do we clean this up? Do I try to pry out the cloth part on the back and then beat the crap out of it? Or is it a lost cause? Rug is just 2 years old but if it is toxic I will just have to throw it out. Don't know if glue powder is toxic

Latex breaks down in the presence of ozone and their is a fair amount present in urban areas.

+1 I have this with a Pottery Barn wool rug that has never been wet. It doesn't smell, though, and is only visible if you lift up the rug

Ok here. Mine was also under the rug when we lifted it but there was a chemical smell though. It looks like what is in the link I shared above but the entire area under the rug had it.

I thought it might be driveway asphalt or something like that
