Can we give Advil or Tylenol for fever?

Doctor said we could go in tmr test for flu. But then Tamiflu causes GI stuff too. He has muscle aches a bit. Low fever nausea. Sounds like noro or food poisoning, but then why muscle aches. He did eat a salad at the airport that he said was bad and only ate half. Just not sure what bad means.

What is his temp? Keep track of that. If the fever hits 102 for a length of time I would go to the ER. But if it's mostly controlled with Tylenol then he probably just needs to get to the other side of this.

I just want to say it’s amazing you made it to 18 years without having to deal with one of your children having noro virus! Nothing like your kid puking in the toilet and pooping in a bowl.

If you are seeing some improvement after 24 hours, then I wouldn't worry. If you aren't seeing improvement, I wouldn't worry about what it is so much as I might be concerned with dehydration. Urgent care can give him an IV to rehydrate him which should also make him feel better. I once went to the ER because I couldn't stop heaving enough to explain my symptoms (although they were obvious). I had a cocktail of fluids, Ativan, and Zophran, that helped me pass the next 12 hours mostly asleep.

Nausea for multiple days isn’t too bad. Pooping too. But if he can’t drink liquids without throwing up, that’s a problem. If he’s ok to sip water (think 1/2 an oz at a time) he’ll be ok. Start with small sips about 15 minutes apart. If he keeps that down for 90 minutes, move to small sips of Gatorade/electrolyte drink. Small sips only! Once he’s had a few hours of drinking small sips, you could try broth or jello. But you can go a long time without eating. You need liquids.

Still nauseated. Sleeps 2-3 hours and then wakes up pukes or diarrhea. Repeat. Having some liquid. Will try smaller amounts or ice. Been 24 hrs soon

Put on a mask!!! Norovirus is worse than covid.

Wait until he stops puking for any medicine or liquids. If he pukes more than 8 times in 12 hours, call a doctor for medical advice about dehydration. A few pukes isn’t a huge deal, but non-stop puking/pooping for many hours can be.

And….. is there a question or do you need a doctor?

As long as he can keep liquids down, and he is peeing and it’s not dark, and no blood in stool, he should be OK. Give him 50% Gatorade and water. If his stomach is bothered- have him take a sip every couple of minutes. Drinking a bunch at a time is what can make people vomit more. The liquids just need to stay down. If he is not peeing or still vomiting, take him in for fluids.

Can he keep liquids down? If he can I wouldn't really worry about not eating.

DS (14) just had the flu. He didn't eat for a good 48hrs +. He was able to drink and keep it down so we just let him be and sleep it off.

If he can't keep liquids down I would probably worry after 24 hours.

The worry is dehydration, which can happen from either end. If he can't keep sips of water down after a little while, if he isn't peeing, if he is incoherent, or if there's blood in what he's putting out, I would worry. His doctor might want him to be seen to rule out stuff like appendicitis or for fluids or anti nausea meds, but probably they will tell you to wait and see for a day or two.

OP honestly have you never had a norovirus? I’m not being snarky I’m just surprised you’re so alarmed at the idea of someone vomiting for 48 hours.

You have to trust your instinct if you think his fever or vomiting are so bad they’re an emergency and take him to the ER but it’s perfectly normal to be sick for a few days.
