My assumption is she had some sort of plastic surgery or beauty treatment. She obviously didn’t want you to see her/didn’t want to talk about it. You should respect that. It will fill her with relief if the next time you see her, you act totally normal/oblivious

I would text her, "Sorry we didn't get to say 'hi' in Target today. Hope our paths cross again soon!"

That doesn't point out whatever is going on with her, but still opens the door for her to follow up if she needs anything, and it ends the awkwardness.

The thing is if you looked like you'd been beaten up you could have just gone through something *very traumatic*. OP's friend might have been assaulted. I'd lean towards privacy or a generic how are you.

I had something very similar happen. I had just had a blepharoplasty and had a bad inflammatory response. I looked like I had been beat up. I reluctantly went to the local pharmacy to grab my steroid and saw someone I knew there. I avoided her because I was in pain and just wanted to go, but I know she saw me, and she knew I saw her.
