I actually looked this up since government jobs (including local government) publish these things. And it looks like part time employees are actually paid for federal holidays.

Those two things are not related.

It’s a county job so I’m sure the employees are being paid regardless of the fact that they are closed.

?? It’s a paid holiday. So how does it save them money? The employees are being paid.

I work in a neighboring county, and the Sundays we’re closed are not official county holidays since most county offices wouldn’t be open anyway. (Even things like Easter and, this year, Christmas Eve.) Regular staff who would have been scheduled that Sunday work an extra day during the week or use leave time, and temp staff just don’t get paid.

I was going to go on Sunday, but was glad I checked the website first to see it was closed.

Annoying, but until a year or so ago, very few MC libraries were open Sundays, and now they all are…except yesterday. So I think overall that’s an improvement.

Lots of events on Saturday and Sunday before MLK day, but employees have the actual Monday off as they should. This is no different than Fourth of July or other federal holidays.

We volunteer on MLK Day. Try that.

Salaries aren’t the only expenses to being open. There’s utilities and supplies, for example.

Do you realize how lucky we are to have a library system that’s open full hours most Sundays year round? That we have all these branches open 7 days a week? And this is what you complain about? The library system here is great. So they close Sundays on holiday weekends, bringing them into line with every other county government office. Maybe they want time off, maybe they want to save utilities, whatever. Holy entitlement Batman.

They probably have use studies that indicate it's a good time to give the staff a break. Library management can look at all the different data and does make decisions using the data, believe it or not.

Lots of people in MoCo travel for these three day weekends, and even more participate in MLK volunteer activities. We were out and about today and there were significantly fewer people around in our part of MoCo, and we live on the "affordable" eastern side.
