Above poster, it was a windy hilly road with no shoulder so I couldn’t get out and move the turtle off the street. I was already worried about slowing down on the road due to blind corner, it was so awful!

I ran over a turtle. I was a new driver, slowed down to try to drive over it between the tires. Going so slow I could hear the shell crack. Scared to this day! It was awful

I managed not to hit any animals until my 30s. I hit a groundhog only going 25 on a gravel road—it stepped onto the road at the last second and I couldn’t have avoided it. Then a squirrel with a death wish (I pretty much stopped, and it appeared to dash back the other way, but then switched directions just as I sped up) and a goldfinch (hit my windshield, I felt so bad!), both last year.

I have also saved a few turtles from becoming roadkill, which makes me feel a little bit better.

At 7am last January, on a day I knew was going to be a long one, I stopped in time and didn’t hit a deer.

Someone else was unable to stop in time, and the deer flew under my car and was stuck there for maybe 15 seconds. It was very hurt, and ran in the opposite direction as its mom.

A cardinal once flew right in front of my car and disappeared. I thought it flew away, I was so relieved I didn't hit it. When I arrived home I found it in the front grill of my car, still alive but it later died (I tried to keep it safe while it recouped, and even called a wildlife rescue, but it died within a couple of hours).

Yes. A pet. I was devastated and felt that pain and heartache for probably a year. (I'll never shake it). It changed the way I back out of my driveway forever.

Definitely a squirrel or two. My mother once backed over our cat. That was pretty bad.

Sure. I’ve crushed a few squirrels. Amazing how you can really feel the bump. Hit a deer once doing about 70. Just caught his head with my front corner so assume he was terminated. No need to stop and check as I don’t eat roadkill.

Yes. The day my mother called to tell me she hit a woman with her car and accidentally killed her, I went off to work and promptly accidentally ran over a squirrel and killed it. I pulled over and called the non-emergency police. They laughed at me as they said it's fine and I can just go on with my life.

I hit a bird once (it flew it front of me on the highway). I had to hose bits of bird out of the grille the next morning and it stank and was incredibly gross.

A goose flew into front of my car as I was driving and i felt the bump and stopped and it wasn’t moving. I felt so bad. I was frantically looking to call some type of animal services and as I was on the phone, the goose got up and flew off. I guess it was just dazed.

Car. But yes; I have a .22 rifle in the trunk. Animal control uses the same thing.

I hit a deer hard on a 2 lane in WV. It rolled up the top of my car and off the side. It ran off.

I also hit a dog once. It darted out in front of me at the last second. I slammed the brakes but couldn’t stop. I cried but I didn’t stop because its owner was there and obviously a huge biker and was yelling profanities at the dog, I had a baby with me and was scared. Its owner could take it to the vet. It wasn’t on a leash so it was his fault.

Yes - I hit a squirrel about 5 years ago in Germantown. There was a car next to me so I couldn’t swerve and couldn’t stop in time. I thought the squirrel would move faster too. I felt the bump when I ran over it… I still think about it from time to time…
