Mine is doing a study abroad and knocking out 9 credits. If that wasn’t the case, would have gone back to her summer camp job for one last summer.

Most likely my college freshman will be working at the retail job he had in high school. He is applying for a short summer study abroad program, it's about 4 weeks. And he's applying to be an orientation aide for the incoming freshmen. If he gets the aide position, he'll move back to campus two weeks early - one week of orientation training then almost a week of orientation with the freshmen. If he does both the study abroad and orientation, he'll actually only be home for about 7 weeks.

My oldest never got an internship - he graduated from college in 2022 and Covid really impacted his ability to secure an internship. He had worked for a small, family owned retail business during the summers and was able to do some "office" work for the owner. My DS was a data analytics major and helped the owner tweak some inventory processes that he was using. The experience he got working for this small business was probably just as valuable as working for a big name company. My DS landed a fantastic job in the fall of his senior year.

This is so true! DC had an internship after Freshman year and continued with that company part-time during soph year. He had 4 different internship offers after soph. year but chose to study abroad that summer, came back and continued with the prev. company. However, the lack of a different, 'better' company impacted his ability to get a 'high-end' (think FAANG, Citadel, etc.) internship after Junior year. It was a bit of a struggle to get an internship at a 'better' company. So, a kid who would have 2 years of part-time actual work experience, with a high GPA was not good enough for these companies. They like to see increasing pedigree.

My freshman is going to a summer session so he’ll have a very short summer, like 6 weeks. I hopeful his old job will let him work some shifts while he’s home. Spending money is going to be an issue next year.

Regular summer jobs are fine. They will help to get internships in future years.

But which chicks to chase? Camilla, Foghorn Leghorn, or Lady Kluck? Camilla’s loyal as they come, and you’ve got to love a hen who so adores a freak like Gonzo. But Foghorn has that southern charm. And Kluck? Feisty and darn good at football, too. Tough choice
