Though I agree with the underlying sentiment that many high school students would be better served by enrichment than acceleration, the vast majority of successful engineering majors and working engineers did not score 800 on the first attempt.

This is not correct. CS majors at VT also start in the college of engineering. There is no direct admit for CS or any of the specialties in engineering—civil, mechanical etc. students declare their speciality after freshman year.

No, DC residents and DC private. Not a big 3 (that term is so ick but didn’t want you to assume Sidwell etc)

In terms of the application itself pay close attention to the supplemental questions. VT reads them and they have weight.

You didn’t ask but adding—

VT has been an amazing and rewarding experience for my kid. The work is difficult in terms of volume. Google the check sheets for the specific majors within engineering. There is no room for electives to speak of. The professors are supportive and want the students to succeed but they have to figure out how to manage the course load.

She is not in a sorority and found friends and a good group of kids.

We are in an IB school in NOVA and did not take any AP calc classes. The hours of calculus offered in these IB classes are significantly less than AP. We have an acceptance with a 33 act math score. Fingers crossed single variable calc goes well this fall.

Yes, but most of these are probably from ROVA and OOS, not northern VA.

My DS had several friends admitted from McLean HS with Calc AB senior yr.
