Very true. She really needs to spend some time there to see if the environment is a good fit. I was accepted many years back and almost accepted without touring since I was so excited I got in. My best decision ever made was touring and not accepting. I am sure some things have changed but the vibe was so different than the other schools and everyone looked uptight/worried/stressed. It was a gorgeous day and almost no one was outside having fun.
I would never allow my kid to ED to a school they never visited.

I agree with you. She went to selective HS and might have prepared her for the challenge but it is going to be wait and see if she gets in. The problem even with good stat and being women and URM there is no clear path to which school she might get in so trying to see if ED2 gives her advantage than RD. One thing I read about CMU is they have good career outcome and guide students very well.
Career outcomes for CS grads from CMU are outstanding.
But as for the experience, for a girl, eh.
We seriously looked at it for a white boy. And noped out.
It's too cutthroat and intense. Didn't think it was a healthy place

Yes
CMU is great for the top notch education. Anyone with a CS degree from CMU is going to do very well.
But goodness, it's very intense and cutthroat. Not making a lot of friends doing CS at CMU.
Everywhere else - MIT, Berkeley, UIUC, etc - will be comparatively more chill.

Your son is a male. CMU takes females with lesser credentials. She could also be coming from a title 1 type of school from rural frederick and your DS could be a student in a magnet STEM program in MoCo.

RD. We attended multiple information sessions at CMU and also emailed admissions just to be 100% sure. They explicitly stated that there was NO admissions advantage to ED.
He is on a scholarship at UMD, which is another reason we did not want to ED since that was also a top choice.
Then what would be the reason they have ED2 (not many schools have ED2), DD has applied to UMD too but would be OOS for us.
Not sure why they have ED2. You would have to ask them. ED1 is likely full of recruited athletes. At one time my son also thought he wanted to ED at CMU. After hearing more and more stories, he is glad to be at UMD instead.

Thank you for sharing. The good thing is she has few safeties so I'm sure there will be disppointment when she does not get accepted but worth to try.

Hi it's me - 15 years out, but had a fab 4 years in CS at CMU - when its the right fit, its the right fit.
