I started dating DH in HS. We went to college together, worked at several of the same jobs during/immediately after college, bought a house, and got married (a few yrs later at 27). We've been together for 17 yrs now.

Sophomore year of college. still dating. It is not always easy but they make it work.


I've asked my DD if she would prefer to not have that additional responsibility during college but their relationship is important enough to both of them that they make it work.


They visit each other a few times a semester and see one another on breaks. talk on the phone every single day.

They dated all of senior year of HS, went to college on opposite sides of the country and are still together more than a year later. I really wish it would end but it appears they still want to hold on to each other. A side issue for us is she was known to lie to us and her friends and I believe her BF as well, so although I give no advice because it isn't asked for, this relationship started with lies from the beginning so from a parent's perspective I'd like it to end as soon as possible to allow her to grow up and not latch on to her past.

A few of DD friends tried to continue dating. They would travel on weekends to each others campus. Both ended up breaking up by Christmas. During that time of dating and leaving campus they missed the opportunity to engage and fully connect with their own schools. They then struggled with connecting with new friends after the breakup. One dropped out and went back to community college close to home.

They agreed to break up either after hs graduation or at the end of summer.

Not a hs bf but a college bf. I met him sophomore year dated Feb, Mar, Apr, May. We were right on the edge of saying I love you.

Summer apart. He cheated.

He told me by end of summer. We got back together in fall but some things were poisoned. It took time. Really in love, but at the year mark we broke up.

Some of it had to do with the cheating.

Young people need to be realistic. It’s dumb to do long distance unless that is the only person you want to care about.

He should have ended it before summer. I wouldn’t have spent that whole summer avoiding guys, too.

Kid 1: broke up senior year in the summer before college. With someone else now.

Kid 2: Dated for jr-sr years in high school. Went to college 8 hours apart. Both played a sport in college, so only saw each other for Winter break and summer vacation all four years. Survived that. Got married 3 years out of college. Still going strong. But both have stubborn, loyal, and sometimes inflexible personalities!

Kid 3: Dated through hs and 3 years of college. Attended college 2 hours from each other. Saw each other most weekends and breaks. Broke up and have been apart for the last year. TBD I guess since I think my kid would go back in a flash, but think it is unrealistic that would happen.

My DS dated his girlfriend for 2+ years in high school and they broke up amicably 2 days before they left for college. Still occasionally go on casual dates (hook up, I suspect) when both are home on break, but don’t talk regularly while at school. They are attending school in different parts of the country.

Similar story here. We grew up a few blocks from one another and were in adjacent social circles but I was a year ahead in grade. Became a couple a few months before I graduated from high school 26 years ago. I went to university 3 hrs away, so went home on the weekends a lot. He joined me at school the next year. We lived in different states for 5 years after university while we each earned our graduate degrees. We eventually made it to the same place at the same time, later got married, and 25 years after we started dating, welcomed our 2nd child.

Mine, like most, broke up over Thanksgiving.

Lots of cheating happens when kids stay together and go to different colleges. Almost easier to end things amicably then to have cheating and guilt and an inevitable messy break up.
