My DS has similar profile and applied SLACs this cycle (1500 / a little lower GPA / high rigor)
Kenyon
Macalester
Oxy
Were top 3 schools and was admitted to 1 ED.

Really liked Hamilton and we thought if he knocked it out with mid-term grades might as well apply given recommendations and grade trends (knew it was a reach but there were so many reasons the school was a good fit)

For Econ I would suggest Bucknell.

Denison has a PPE major - Philosophy,Poly Sci, and Economics that might be of interest.

Adding Dickinson, Gettysburg, Union to some of the other suggestions. Also consider Lewis & Clark if your DC is open to schools outside the east coast.

For a kid with those stats and decent extracurriculars, Macalester and Kenyon are still fairly reachy, and Occidental and Skidmore have become more selective too. Not impossible, though, with great essays and recommendations.


Agree. FP helps a lot at most of these.

The idea here is this isn’t a student with 1500+ and straight As in a heavy rigor course load, which seems necessary for top 10, maybe even top 20. He’s just a rung below all that perfection. But still a very strong student of course.


Hate to say this but w/o an approximate GPA as someone mentioned up thread, it’s not really possible to suggest what is possible. Are we talking 3.3 or 3.7?


Call it 3.6 in core academic subjects with mostly AP/honors

Top 50 these days.

I would focus on 75-100, it’s a nice sweet spot. Full pay, ED, and male are huge and will open some more doors than would otherwise.

So - again w caveat that it’s hard to assess wo gpa, maybe for a ED reach I’d look at Bates or vassar. For a target maybe SK e if the ones previously mentioned on conn college

But ED I and II helps a lot at SLACs


Based on OP’s assessment, a mix of As and Bs would be a big, big reach for Vassar @ our DCs’ independent, one of tops in NYC.
