Because of weight,cost, and because many people.nowadays can watch on their tablets/phones. Every major US airline has an onboard streaming entertainment system- I have always been able to find something good to watch on my tablet.
Half the time I find the Wi-Fi is terrible and I can’t actually watch the streaming options. I preferred when you could just access movies and shows on the seatback screens.

That’s odd. I fly Imited all the time and they always have plenty of movies, TV, news and sports available.
We had this same experience in November when we flew United from IAD to Aruba. After the plane left the continental US, only 4 movies were available, and they were all terrible options. Before it got out of the US, Direct TV was available with lots of channels.
