Yes. Different schools, depends on the major, but both are excellent and the best employers recruit at both. Both schools send kids to the best grad schools. Etc.

By NC state law, no state university can have >18% OOS. That makes UNC as/more selective for OOS (8% acceptance, I think, you can check) as Duke. UNC averages around 15% OOS. But realize that also changes the character of the school: 85% of peers are from NC. Fwiw it was the only school that DD didn’t get in—got in NWern, Vandy, UVA, went to UVA OOS where more OOS (30-40%) meant less of any outsider.

Ha. In general, Duke is regarded as the better school. I don't think this generation of Duke students matches the douchebaggery of prior generations. UNC Chapel Hill is a really tough admit for OOS. But instate, it's like Maryland. Good school, and to their credit they focus on instate students. They take a small percentage of full pay OOS students to fill the coffers, like the UC schools do.


BUT you still can get still lucky as OOS. Our HHI is twice the average for our area and DC was still offered a grant and small scholarship, bit over 9K annually.
UNC seems to like certain HS possibly, as each year at least one kid from DC HS is attending.

This is a random comparison of two very different colleges. The only connection is geography. It’s the same as comparing UMD to JHU.

True, if anything most of the Duke admits we know are high achieving Asians. Many asians from TJ seem to enroll too


Duke historically has been less anti Asian than schools in the north east

Indian-Americans nationwide have a huge affinity for duke compared to most ivies

The fact anyone is charging to teach journalism these days is a crime.


Northwestern University offers the best journalism program in the country. Northwestern admissions sends cautionary advice to all students accepted by the journalism school regarding pay & career prospects. Northwestern either requires or strongly encourages all journalism majors to double major is another subject such as economics. seems like wise advice to me.
