I agree. The president has made no statement on either Israel of Gaza. My son had a very conservative Mexican kid in his English class who outright said when asked that he didn’t support LGBTQ. At any other school, he would’ve been run out on a rail.

Congrats! To get in RD to Pomona is an amazing accomplishment. Definitely go to admitted students day and check it out. Harder admit than a lot of Ivys!

My senior just got into Pomona (one of the Claremont colleges). 6% acceptance rate. It was on him. I didn’t know anything about it, but since doing research it sounds fantastic.

I've also heard good things anecdotally about Oxy.

If you are looking at Scripps, I would have your daughter take a look at Pitzer too. It's a co-ed college in the same Claremont 5C consortium as Scripps (the others are Pomona, CMC and Harvey Mudd).

A friend's daughter is a freshman at Scripps and is loving it. She came from a very selective private high school in San Francisco (Urban School) and speaks very highly of Scripps.

Sounds to me like Scripps is yield protecting. I bet if she expresses a lot of interest she has a good chance of getting off waitlist.

You can check a school's Common Data Set to get an idea. Most CDSs have info about the waiting list, and a school usually posts CDSs for different years.

From Scripps CDC for Fall 2023 admissions:

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 704
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 337
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 74

That is just data from last year, though. This year could be different.

BTW, her SAT score seems strong and the GPA looks good too. Good luck!

My kid applied to LMU and not Santa Clara. My impression is that some of the differences between the two schools is more a product of where they are located and the industry/internships and top programs. So LMU might attract more students wanting to major in film, arts, and communication in addition to students wanting to study business while Santa Clara may have more students that want to major in something tech related in addition to students wanting to study business. They also have some differences in the racial diversity of the students. However, in terms of school size, Jesuit mission and experience attending the school, they are probably more similar than different and have overlap in their applicant pool.

Scripps has a great reputation and is part of the 5 Claremont consortium, well regarded reputation. Pitzer is good too. Pomona and CMC are harder to get into.

I have a friend with two daughters at Oxy now and they love it. They are studying humanities and came from a very highly regarded private school in SF. My friend herself went to Stanford and she said she's been really impressed with Oxy and delighted her daughters are there. I think Oxy is easier to get into than the Claremont schools.

Oxy is 30 minutes from LA (closer to Pasadena). Scripps/Pitzer/etc. is more like an hour or so from LA and more surburban.

Both have great job/internship opps in LA. Both mostly live on campus. Clueless movie was filmed on Oxy's campus. Both have professors teaching smaller classes versus TA's.

If she is heterosexual she has the greatest chance of meeting smart and likely successful to be men if she goes to Scripps. Given close proximity to HMC and Pomona. And her outcomes for herself will be great too!

How similar are LMU and Santa Clara in terms of vibe, type of students, etc.
