What on earth is an airport party?

Airport Parties are pretty dorky but some people swear by them. It's all word of mouth and not promoted online. APers always say "screens are mean." They gather around the departures board until enough APers show up, carrying tons of (empty) luggage. Then the group goes around the airport (ticketing areas, etc) saying "Excuse us, can you pwwwwease tell us where gate so-and-so is?" and when people say what? They say "Nevvvver mind! but thannnnk you!!!" and run away with a lot of them fake crying and saying "boo-hoo", etc. Then they go to some other area and do the same. It goes on for a couple of hours. They try to do something with the airport's name. At Dulles it was "Hey-ro is this Dulles?" and the person says yes, they say "Dull? Us? Never!!" and run away, blowing whistles and noisemakers. It's apparently a big matchmaker.

I think I speak for a lot of us when I ask:
WTF

I googled this and found a blog about a really cute birthday party hosted at Dulles Airport for a 4-year-old...things I wish I'd known about 10 years ago.

- Kids' friends parents (mine seem to be younger than yours)
- Volunteering and church
- Meeting co-workers of my DH
- When I moved to DC, I had friends from other places put me in touch with friends they had in the area

I'll also say I've had good luck with making friends who are younger and single - they're more available to hang out! It takes a lot of time to become friends with someone in the beginning.

I’ve met a few friends from the high school pta. I headed a committee and became friendly with the pta board. One member is very friendly and has introduced me to some of her friends. We see one another at school events or sporting events.

Real estate agents in my area often throw events like client appreciation nights. I met a woman recently who I really liked at one of those. TBD if we will actually become friends.

I am friendly with my kids’ friends’ parents.

Any neighbors worth meeting? Some of the extroverted people around here will host BBQ pot lucks and we have a group of moms that gets together once a month or so.
