From Case? No. Got waitlisted and then they had some crazy steps to stay on the WL. Dropped out right away.

What kind of steps?

You had to check in every week to stay on the list.

Would you mind elaborating on this? Check in- how? Just an email saying you’re still interested? Or more than that?

I am sure a great school for some kids but they do seem to value demonstrated interest. If your kid really wants to go there, switch to ED2. Oh and get ready for a ton of emails about how great the school is. I thought that was a strange thing to do after a deferral.

Case is infamous for this merit-from-the-waitlist strategy, which they use to keep their admissions rate down. They do not want to be anyone’s safety school.

My nephew was in one, but left it pretty quickly. He is still friends with the guys from the house, but the housing itself was very run down. The dorms were much nicer. His GF is in a sorority. It is extremely mellow. They tend to socialize plenty however with friends they met their freshman year and team mates (she is a runner).

My DS is there in his 2d year and loves it. He is not in a frat but does have friends in them. They do host parties on the weekends, as do many other groups, and all seem welcome. He has made an incredible group of friends. There is a good international mix, and he is being exposed to many cultures he didn't have experience with before and enjoys that. He classes are quite good and challenging (mostly CS, engineering and business). His classmates seem to study during the week and relax on weekends. There is plenty of informal gatherings during the week as well, lots of clubs, club sports, theater, going out to eat in the city. He hasn't said much about school spirit, but has gone to cheer on some friends playing soccer. The women's team is quite good. Kids we have met seem proud of the school, challenged and very happy.

But I would say if you are look for D1 football, 20,000 screaming fans, and a massive Greek culture ruling the roost, you will not find that at CWRU.

Absolutely not. The Cleveland Botanical gardens, symphony, natural history museum are all there. It is next to little Italy, on the metro line, and nestled between major hospital centers. The surrounding neighborhood of Cleveland Heights looks like AU Park DC or Newton MA.

Cleveland is a city so there are certainly very down-trodden areas (have you been to DC?), but good lord, drive through it or even look on google maps.

No it is not a ghetto. The campus is a city.

Isn’t CW in a ghetto? When I go to Cleveland Clinic for my cardio appointments we are advised to avoid this area. We walked down Euclid (against what we were told to do) and even the front door of the Marriott was locked. They would not let us use the restroom there and we are titanium with them. It was an odd campus.

My friend's son is there and LOVES it.

I wanted our kid to apply but they felt like it wouldn't be big enough. They wanted a huge rah-rah school. I chose CWRU as an option due to the excellent location in a city near museums and coffee shops, etc. I do think there's a nerdy - science kid vibe, which is perfect for the right kid. When we attended a prospective student zoom call, most students were studying nursing, biomed, pre-med, etc.

For the right student, this school is amazing. They care a lot about demonstrated interest, and I think they still give decent merit aid.

How can they offer scholarships without an acceptance?

Waitlisted after deferred?! that is tough! Please share your kid's stats if possible and where is he/she now? We will need to redo our college list with this unexpected deferral.

It was annoying but all fine since would not have ended up going after other choices unfolded. At Maryland/College Park for CS. Never considered it a "safety" but Naviance was a sea of green. Stats: 4.0 UW/4.8 W/35 ACT/12 APs/varsity athlete/clubs/internships. Never visited or showed any interest and last year they had optional interviews that were always full too. Constant emails to switch to ED and a scholarship offer with no admission were a major turn off.
