I would only do a monogram for a serious relationship though.

Lol, to me a stocking on the mantel implies you are part of the family. Guests don't traditionally leave their hosiery in the main living area.

Be sure to make a big fuss when you present the monogrammed stocking to your future child-in-law. "Many have had stockings here before you....but only you have been monogram worthy!" Might actually be a compliment, tbh...

I mean, residents of the home don’t traditionally leave their hosiery in the main living area when guests are visiting, either.

OP, when my kids were dating, I’d pull out a spare stocking and put a piece of masking tape with the SO’s name in Sharpie on it. Everyone would always get a hoot out of the “homespun” nature of that next to the embroidered ones.

When you say they got a hoot out of it, you mean they secretly talked behind your back about how incredibly rude that was? I'd rather have a stocking without a name than one as "homespun" as that.

My in-laws just combine our stuff into one stocking, so DH and I share everything inside and there are usually one or two small wrapped things with my or his name on it. They did give our children each their own stocking.

What do you put in them?

Candy and/or gum. Gift cards in small amounts. Socks. Lip balm. The options are nearly endless.

Seriously. Walk around Target for 15 minutes. Lottery tickets, nail polish, face masks, fun snacks, travel sized toiletries.

If SO will be there for whenever you open Xmas and everyone else gets filled stocking, would out up one but would not have name on it.

Just put “[your kid’s name] Current SO.”

Or "Rebound Guy"

Small arts and crafts kits also add to some instant fun.

Give presents instead.

I made a stocking for a boyfriend once when I was feeling crafty, but never expected ours to hang together on a mantel (high school boyfriend).

I wrote the post quoted above. This thread interests me. I assumed the stocking were just decorative.

In my family we don't fill adult stockings. They are just mantel decor. Only kids who believe in Santa get gift-filled stockings.

Having spares to fill for guests is kindly. But so surprising to me.

We always have one or two extras in case we have guests.

Ds and his gf have been together 6 1/2 years. I use a gift bag for her stocking items. I'm waiting for ds to buy her one.

I anticipate giving my DC their stocking and they can get something for SO or just have it as a keepsake and not having a stocking for DC at that point. They will have their own house, stockings, and traditions and we will be back to just having 2 stockings. But, it sounds like some people fill stockings for adults?
