I would do it in that situation. I definitely wouldn't drive my two year old for an hour each week at 10pm, that seems more dangerous to me.

I have a 12.5 yo (7th grader) and wish she could take Uber from Georgetown to Chevy Chase following the end of her 8:45 pm basketball practice. Alas, I leave my 10 year-old home alone (with full access to hardwired phone + texting/calling on iPad) while waiting at her practices since I don't trust Uber drivers to safely bring home a tween/early teen. I have a husband but he travels a lot and/or is still working for his West coast-based company that time of night.

I live in nyc and my just 14yo has been taking Uber for about a year. So have all her friends (and many more were taking it earlier than that). I feel safer with her doing that than taking the subway home alone late, though she typically just takes the subway everywhere. She typically isn’t coming home later than 9, but if she were I would be fine with it, especially as I get a notification whenever she gets a ride. And if another parent is stating until the car picks her up that’s an extra level of protection. As does the Uber teen feature which only allows for more highly screened drivers.

Did you guys miss that the friend lives 1/2 hour in the opposite direction? So driving OP’s kid home would take an extra hour.
It’s unreasonable to think the friend’s parent should do that.

This. As a parent, I would never let my kid’s friend take an Uber alone. I’d drive them home. I have a 13 year old.

My kids are in college now, but I delayed letting them Uber alone until they're about 15. prior to that I always make sure that if they took an Uber that they were not alone in the car, they could go with friends.
I did not have a two-year-old when my kids were teenagers if I were in your shoes, I would not let my kid Uber alone at 10 PM at night. I would likely put my two-year-old in the car and go pick my kid up.

No. It’s great the other parent would wait for the Uber, but then? And at 10pm? OP you need to get someone to sit with the sleeping 2yo or take the 2yo with you.

If my son was comfortable with it and the other parents were there when he got in the car and assured that the location was correct I’d have him do it. Plus I’d have him call me as soon as he departed and give me his ETA which you can see on the app. And I’d probably text him half way to make sure he is ok and to give me comfort.

I’m a single parent of a SN kid. My kid finally found a good friend, and they wind up walking to my house after school. The friend lives on the other side of town and normally gets a bus home. The other parents do not have a car, so I drive the friend home every single time. The kid has an Uber teen account but no way am I sending a 14 year old girl home in a random Uber, even if it’s “teen”.

Honestly, it pisses me off, but my daughter finally has a friend and she needs this, so I do it. If you have kids, get a car. You think you’re so green but I’m just using my gas and time to do it.

We just started Uber teen with my 14yo. He is almost 15.

If other family is willing to wait for Uber, they should just drive him home.

I have younger kids so I get not doing the late night drive. My 12yo always gets a ride home and my 14yo also gets a ride home. I always offer the early drop offs.

My youngest is 2, and it’s a sport practice that ends at 10.

I'm the pp who was the first to respond.

A 2 year old can sleep in the car seat. 10 pm is too late for a 13 year old to be alone in a car with a stranger, IMO--especially for a half hour drive.
