My DD is in residential treatment at Newport Academy in CT and so far it has been a positive experience. Fully covered by insurance except for copay. He’s been at Sheppard Pratt PHP and Discovery PHP. Sheppard Pratt was a copay only. For Discovery insurance covered most but I had to pay like $1850 out of pocket. I have really good insurance but from what I have discovered and have been told by the behavioral specialists at my insurance that only certain residential/PHP/IOP locations are covered and the reason for that is because if the location has enough patients willing and able to pay out of pocket they are not going to sign up for those locations to be covered by insurance. This is his 2nd residential stay and had to go out of state both times because there were no locations in and around MD that take insurance.

Bumping to look for more feedback and costs that come out of pocket even with private insurance

This is a bit of a straw man's argument as our entire health and mental health care system in the US is a profit driven adventure. Embark is owned by private equity but that doesn't necessarily make it a horrible program. I don't know who owns Newport.

I know people who have done both - they are short-term programs and work for some. If your child isn't bought in and/or has more serious mental health issues, longer term residential are needed. In MD, that means RICA Rockville or RICA Baltimore. There isn't a whole lot else in MD for long term residential for adolescents.

I know 2 families whose teens attended the Newport PHP in Rockville and their teens are doing well. My DD went to Newport in Orange CA for a RTC. At the time BCBS did not Rockville in-network. This a step up, but I can speak highly to Summit Achievement in Stow, ME. It’s private pay RTC school three days per week. There’s no correlation with Newport not being effective; BCBS capped benefits at 30 days.

We are also looking for a PHP but for a 10 year old. There are so many limited options for a child as young as ours. I am sorry that so many parents are feeling the same pain as us right now. It is so isolating and awful.

For us, Newport - Rockville location was a bad experience and won't recommend to anyone.

Homeschooling is not a replacement for mental health care or a cure for depression.

My son went to Newport Academy in Virginia last year. From my knowledge, they have treatment locations across the country including some in the Midwest and Northeast. While I can't speak to the other locations, we had a positive experience in VA. He went through residential, PHP, & IOP as we don't live too far from the area.

My daughter went to residential at Embark Independence. They were amazing. I felt that the admissions coordinator was very compassionate and explained my financial responsibility really well. Unfortunately my insurance denied extending her stay. She did not want to leave nor was she ready. They fought for her. She then went into the Embark PHP. It was not a good fit. The difference that really affected her was the ability to bond with the other kids. In residential, the kids could lean on and share with each other. PHP they weren’t allowed to share too much. The staff in both locations were amazing however the extended staff in residential were able to connect to my daughter- they were there based on their own experiences.
Unfortunately, she’s headed back to treatment. Now to Newport Academy. Availability is across the west coast and we live in the south. It’s disheartening that so many children are needing this type of treatment and so very few resources.

Not sure if this post is relevant to the question but I hope it helps someone!

First off, you not alone and putting questions out there can be a lifesaver for the uninitiated. We have direct experience at Newport Rockville. We tried for Sheppard Pratt as it is uniformly well regarded but they have very limited capacity. Newport’s program was a good fit for our child and family, but it took a lot of self advocacy from child and parent alike, especially when we were initially assigned a terrible family therapist. Once we addressed that it was transformational for our family with strong educational coordination with child’s school - that is until more than 6 months later midway through one of their modules when Newport informed us they inadvertently continued treatment for weeks after we maxed out insurance coverage and told us we would have to pay out of pocket, with no advance warning. The fees were astronomical and treatment ended abruptly with no outplacement or continuity of care. Our child deteriorated quickly and ended up back in the hospital with an acute episode shortly afterwards. We later learned abrupt end of service due to poor management of insurance is a common occurrence at all of Newport’s locations. For the most part their therapists are good - but be cautious and informed with any of the for profits as revenue supersedes all else.

If school is driving her crazy, consider homeschooling as an alternative to PHP.

this is poster 14:26 - my daughter was two months in PHP and three months in IOP. I think how long treatment lasts depends on what the individual is in treatment for and the pace of progress they make? Our daughter worked out a written treatment plan with her therapist that we parents had to sign off on and it set her goals for during treatment. At the start we were told the programs can go up to eight weeks for PHP and up to 15 weeks for IOP.
