My child is rarely absent and I don't remember ever being asked for one before. She said the system is cracking down on this. Was curious if other people have recently been asked for doctor's notes?

Just write one yourself and give it to her. It's pretty random, to be honest.

Ok just my paranoia - I saw this was announced to the whole school in September

Attendance matters:

In order for an absence, late arrival or early departure to be marked excused we need the note from the doctor. Please, remember to provide the doctor note for all appointments. We need these notes within 3 days of returning to school

I would push back. That is not MCPS policy.

I’m taking my +1 back because I think I’m wrong on this. I googled and many schools have this policy. i’m pasting this one although this is the same policy that several middle schools and high schools also listed. None of my kids schools have required a note for late arrival for doctor appointment but I usually proactively bring one. I’m sure I have forgotten in the past.

Illness of the student
The principal may require the student's parent/guardian or the eligible student to provide documentation from a student's authorized health care provider in cases in which a student has chronic or extended absences for an illness or for a pregnancy- or parenting-related condition as set forth

Yes, MCPS does give schools and principals the ability to tighten or loosen attendance policies as needed.

Most schools are requiring notes from the office because there are plenty of parents who lie. It was amazing to me the other day when I had 4 kids miss my 1st period test, all with variations of doctor/dentist/ortho appt/appt run late. 🙄 yeah, right.

I would write a note saying you kept your kid home sick for that period of time and don't mention the appointment. Dumb to require a note for appointments when you can just call them sick.

Yes, it's awkward now that they know the actual reason. But let them challenge it if they feel like it's worth their time.

You should only care if your kid has a high number of them. Otherwise it means nothing.

+1. Our front office regularly messes them up (like the first day of being sick is excused, but the second isn't), and at this point I don't bother to fix it. It's a day or two a year and doesn't matter.

Is this at a school that starts with B? She's notoriously unreasonable and she will refuse to excuse the appointment.

If you’re talking about Blair that woman is over the top. She called to verify a note we sent to excuse my son 15 minutes early for an appointment. Fifteen minutes before the end of school! She’s like the attendance Gestapo.

My teen has weekly therapy appointments at lunch. We have been required to provide a doctors note when he returns. I find it an inconvenience but I’m told it’s the policy.

I would ask why they need that when that reveals confidential health info (like the type of medical professional your child saw). That's ridiculous.
