Amenities that are important to you: indoor pool with lap lanes? Steam room? Sauna? Squat cage? Trainers? Classes?

For me, windows. I hate working out in a windowless basement.

Yes!! Windows are a must. A sauna, nice locker room are also must haves. A huge plus is in indoor track that is at least 1/8 mile

If you think you want classes but still aren’t 100% ready to commit to a specific gym after a free trial, consider class pass to try for a longer period.

I took all the free classes in my zip code and then joined the gym that I fell in love with. It was really fun! I tried everything from that aerial aerobics class to Pilates.

1) see how busy it is during the times you'd be working out

2) look for management involvement. Are the employees just sitting around or are they actively cleaning the equipment

3) I'm female and use primarily free weights - which is mostly populated by males. Look to see if you would feel comfortable and also welcome to work out in that area IF you use free weights

4) Bathrooms and changing rooms are huge for me. They have got to be clean otherwise that's a big point against.

Then of course convenience. you don't want to have to drive more than 15 mins to your gym otherwise you'll likely never go.

Looks can be deceiving. When my normal gym was still closed post Covid I joined a different gym for a few month. The guys in the weight area were much more serious lifters and big guys, however in the 3 months I was at that gym more people talk to be than had spoken to me in the 10 years I was at my previous gym. I went back to my old gym when it reopened because I like the physical gym better, but much referred the people/culture at the other one.

Those guys on roids actually really know the ins and outs of working out and like the pp said are typically very helpful
