I have access to 10 librarys in MD, VA and DC. I LOVE the library. I took a look at Houston Public Library and WOW! It has a LOT of the books that I had tagged with "Notify Me" on Libby!

I just signed up with them. It's $40 a year for non-TX residents. It took about 5 minutes. You sign up online and the system gives you an account number immediately.
Once you log in, you have a $40 "fine" for out of state resident that you have to pay before you can check out material. I paid it right then and got immediate access. Easy peasy!

If you add them all to your Libby app and search for a book, it will find the library with current availability or the shortest waitlist.

I think hoopla (available on some local library cards) gives you online material without waiting, although there is a limit on the number of borrows per month.

If you have multiple cards, the kanopy monthly limit is less problematic too. I have a different library account on each device.

Same. Long wait times at Fairfax. It’s been over 8 months and I’m still waiting for Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book, Emperor of all Maladies.

Brooklyn Public Library used to let you join out of state for a small fee and because BPL is such a huge system, availability was great. But they quit:

Out-of-State Card
As of July 15, 2022, Brooklyn Public Library is no longer offering its fee-based out-of-state library card. Our priority remains serving Brooklynites and assuring that they can access the materials they need in a timely manner. BPL Library cards remain free for anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes or attends school in New York State. Existing out-of-state accounts will remain active until their expiration date and will not be renewable.




MCPL allows buy-in - at least that's how my mom has been using it for years.

I live in ffx and I find that the books come fast and furious. It's hard to keep up.

They always move much faster than the app predicts.

My TBR is so long that I have plenty to keep myself entertained until the next hold comes through. They key is to either being super fast on release day or put a lot on hold and have your turn constantly coming up on another book.

Loudoun County PL has hoopla, which is a different model than overdrive. You get 10 check outs a month but never need to wait for stuff. I found a lot in their collection that I am interested in, but it can be hit or miss if they have any particular titles.
