OP here. We have a fig tree as well but I completely lost track of the harvesting schedule so I didn't get to enjoy a single one before they were no longer good.

As an update: DW took a bag of them (25 lbs or so) to work yesterday and they were gone in a matter of minutes. Co-workers called later that night raving about them so I guess people really like them (I had never heard of persimmons before moving into this house). We'll probably just take more to our respective jobs after Thanksgiving since I've only been able to pick about a quarter of the tree.

I guess it's a fruit that most people have not tried.

I grew up in CA, Asian American, and we ate persimmons growing up. I was surprised when I moved to the DC area how many people had never tried persimmons.

My friend from the UK also had never tried it.

I guess I lived in a CA bubble when it comes to fruit.

OP, are you near Alexandria? Someone on my local FB Buy Nothing group is looking for a persimmon for her daughter’s photography project.

Eat it like an apple.

you need to peel it first. The skin isn't great.

There's no market for native persimmons because they're incredibly delicate when ripe and just plain nasty when unripe.

The Japanese ones are very expensive and dersirable, so OP could sell those

I'm the overwhelmed fig tree poster from fall. I'll look in my canning books for you!

oh, I'm going to try this. I love persimmons but we can't possibly eat them all, though the squirrels seem to get their fair share. I told DH we needed to pick all of them today before the squirrels get more.

Only with fuyu persimmons. And then it can be treated by drinking coke.

The tannins in an unripe persimmon are so offputting its unlikely you'd eat an unripe one
