More of a report card for the system. And because MCPS does so terribly on the tests, they delay the release of the scores to parents as long as possible (and talk about how “flawed” the test is). Teachers have other indicators to help figure out where your DC is.

But it's about to count as a significant part of a semester grade in bio and alg.

There’s no shortage of ways that teachers can ensure kids get good grades in MCPS. I’m sure they will figure out a way to soften the impact and of the test on kids’ grades.

My kid scored 97th in 3rd grade but somehow messed up in the fall of 4th went down to 85th. I don’t think it indicates that his comprehension ability deteriorated. To me it seems he probably rushed on the test or something. But the school uses his score to place him in the lower reading group. How is that an accurate assessment of his abilities?

They are more accurate than other tests. Truly gifted/advanced kids never score under 99%. Smart kids scores will range high 80s to mid to high 90s.

What is your source for this? If "truly gifted kids" have not been exposed to the material then how do you know they will score in the 99th percentile?

I like to make up numbers.

I’m not the person who posted this, but I can attest that my own kids never went below 98th especially my 3rd grade one (still a long way to prove this point). No I never intentionally exposed him to the advanced materials, because I can’t afford him being even more bored at school. They are just quick to pick up the concept if they see or read it.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

I never heard MCPS say the test is flawed.

Isn't MCAP that new test the sate made up to replace PARC that the majority of students in the state fail because they haven't tested or debugged it?

No, the PARCC consortium collapsed due to RWNJ political posturing, so it was renamed to a different name for each state because Republicans demagogues want to tell their constituents that state doesn't teach the same pinko commie math and English.

Even MCAP haters know that.

This is a report card for the system. By the time we (the staff) have seen your child's scores, we're well into the school year. We are using MAP and formative assessment data in class to tailor instruction for our students.

Your point is well taken. The fact is that a good standardized test is difficult to develop. Standardized test have the least precision in demonstrating ability and evidence of learning.

In looking at an extreme example, it's well known that Adolph Hitler found standardized tests a valuable tool for his ends.

Weird place for Godwin's Law!

I am the poster and yes this is how kids like this pick things up. I know because I have a kid like this and another one who is also smart but just not the same way.

And everyone is 99th percentile on dcum.

That's just you and that PP's opinions. Two opinions are not enough to make such a broad generalization.
